This insurance normally takes the form of third party cover at the very least, and if you’d like you can also purchase a Collision Damage Waiver. This isn’t mandatory, but it’s worth thinking about as it does lower your deposit.
Lots of drivers tend to find that their personal insurance policies won’t cover hire vehicles, but there are exceptions. If you’re one of them, it’s worth bearing in mind that lots of car hire companies tend to offer extra incentives if you use your own insurance, and we’re no different at Intack Self Drive - we offer a 20% discount for customers who use their own insurance.
What happens if I damage a rental car?
The answer to that depends on exactly where and how the car has been damaged, and the severity of the damage in question. Most car rental companies will require you to pay a standard excess to repair specific types of damage. We provide the option to purchase a Loss Damage Waiver here at Intack, which effectively lowers your excess. However, it doesn’t cover all types of damage - so if something like the roof of your hire car is damaged for example, you’ll need to be prepared to pay for repairs.
Does the deposit have to be paid on my credit / debit card?
The deposit must be paid on a credit or debit card in the driver’s name, and the balance is normally taken via pre-authorisation. If the hire will extend for longer than 6 days though, the deposit will simply be banked. Pre-authorisations generally take between 5 and 7 working days to drop off, whereas we’ll make sure that any banked deposits are refunded as soon as you return the vehicle. Just bear in mind that they can often take up to 3 days to show!
