Few tasks in life can be as stressful as moving house. There’s so much to consider that it can almost be hard to know where even to start. But don’t let that take the fun and excitement out of your move! As demanding and time-consuming as it can sometimes be, moving house is a fresh start, and that’s something to look forward to. Here at Intack Self Drive, we’ve put together a list of four tips to help you stay organised and take the edge off moving homes.

1. Lists, lists, lists

It’s easy to put off the little tasks that seem like they’ll take two minutes, but eventually, they’ll mount up into one mammoth task that’ll be mind-numbing (and not to mention stressful) to complete. It’s better to take care of things a little and often as your move day gets closer. So, lists will be your best friends when it comes to moving houses. There’s a lot of moving parts to keep track of. If you try to juggle every last detail without proper organisation, it’s significantly more likely that something will go wrong or you’ll forget something.

Here’s a few examples of the tasks you might want to put on these lists:

• Packing schedules - from what to keep to what you can pack early, all the way down to when you’re going to defrost the freezer and clear out the loft
• Informing your local council, doctor, work and home insurance company of your move
• Update your details at your bank or any building societies 
• Updating your address on IDs and licenses
• Passing on your new address to family and friends
•   Register with your new local doctor, dentist, optician and vet (if necessary)

2. Declutter your current house to make packing easier

Over time we all accumulate random bits and pieces that we don’t necessarily need to take with us when we move. Your new home is a fresh start, so use this time to get your home thoroughly decluttered, only keeping what you truly need and love. Donating, recycling, and just generally getting rid of these excess items before you start packing will make your life so much easier and stop the boxes from mounting up more than they need to (it'll also make unpacking again far less time-consuming). You could even hire a skip if you’re getting rid of more significant items like furniture that are no good to anyone (like an extra Christmas tree that’s been sitting unused in the loft for years).

3. Pack your things strategically

When moving home, it’s never too early to tackle the packing. If you’ve got items you know you can live without for a few weeks, save time by getting them boxed up. If you’ve made a packing schedule like we mentioned earlier, you’ll have a good idea of what you can put away early to make life more convenient.

When it comes time to pack up the majority of your items, do so room by room and number/label each box (you can also use coloured tape to seal the boxes) so you can keep track of exactly where everything is in transit, that way if you need to reach for something that’s packed away, you’ll be able to go straight to the box you need. There’s nothing worse than needing something small and having no idea where or when it got packed!
